Ekom-Nkam Waterfalls

Located in the Moungo department of Cameroon, near Melong, are among the most majestic in the country. They peak at 80 meters and are located in the village of Ekom-Nkam, inhabited by the Bareko people. Their name comes from two words: “Ekom”, the village, and “Nkam”, the river that feeds them.

This natural site offers two waterfalls: a “male fall”, fed in all seasons by the Nkam River, and a “female fall”, visible only during the rainy season and fed by the Oham River. This emblematic place even served as a setting for the film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan in 1982.

Access to the falls is via a 9km track, ideal for hiking enthusiasts, but also accessible by car. Around the falls, a dense forest is home to a diverse fauna including chimpanzees, monkeys, porcupines and pangolins. The surrounding rivers are teeming with fish, such as catfish and goliath frogs, and the local flora is distinguished by majestic trees such as baobabs and iroko.

The local culture, mainly carried by the Mbô ethnic group, is rich in traditions. Rites such as the Mengoum, dedicated to the dead, and celebratory dances such as the Ngono and the Mbelè, punctuate the lives of the inhabitants. The village does not offer restaurants or hotels, but hotel complexes are located in the surrounding area.
